The trail mainly follows footpaths and country roads. Three sections cross the meadows and you will have to climb over stiles. The countryside is marked at the beginning by the orchards of the eastern Pays de Herve and then by the forest of the Hertogenwald massif. You follow the run of la Gueule, then you look out over the lake and dam of Eupen.

The departure point is on the edge of the town, but you soon reach the forests of the outskirts of the High Fenns. The trails are generally broad and comfortable. Only a few hundred metres of paths punctuate the second half of the course. Here it’s the forest, mostly deciduous trees. Small bridges allow you to cross numerous streams before passing by the lake and the mighty dam of Gileppe.

After a succession of stiles and making your way to the village of Jalhay you are soon in the forest. It starts gently enough but, gradually, the elevation becomes more marked on the paths and on the gratings. First the forest, then the heathland of the High Fenns. Water is all around: streams to cross, sometimes by stepping stones, spongy ground that require the wearing of sensible footwear.
N.B.: dogs, whether or not on leash, are not allowed for this stage, which crosses the uplands of the High Fenns.
